About Calhoun Transport

Calhoun Transport is a towing company based in Fort Calhoun, Nebraska, north of Omaha on Highway 75. It has been running since 2023, it is owner-operated, it runs flatbed trucks, and the person who answers the phone is the person responsible for what happens next.

The name is literal. The business is registered in Fort Calhoun, the trucks are based there, and Washington County is home rather than an outlying service area. That is unusual for towing around here, because most of the operators covering these towns are dispatching out of Omaha or Council Bluffs and treating the trip north as a long run.

What we actually do

Roughly speaking, the work splits in two. There is the part everybody pictures, which is somebody stranded who needs a truck: a breakdown on I-80, a car in a ditch on a county road, a dead battery on a cold morning. And there is the part nobody pictures, which is scheduled commercial work. Dealer and lot transfers, auction runs, fleet and service department moves, equipment between job sites. The second half is a large share of the week.

Both run on the same decks. That is why the trucks that carry a wrecked sedan on Monday carry a skid steer on Tuesday and a low, expensive coupe off a dealership lot on Wednesday. A flatbed does not care what is on it as long as the weight and the dimensions work.

Why everything goes on a deck

A wheel lift is a perfectly good tool for a simple vehicle going a short distance. It is a bad tool for most of what actually gets towed now. All-wheel drive cars should not be dragged with two wheels turning, lowered cars catch on the approach, wrecked cars will not roll straight, and anything that has been sitting in a yard for three years will not roll at all. Carrying the whole vehicle removes every one of those arguments at once.

It also means the vehicle arrives in the condition it left in, which matters more than it sounds when somebody is about to assess it for an insurance claim or put it back on a lot for sale.

A registered carrier, not a truck and a phone number

Towing attracts operators who work for cash out of a truck with no paperwork behind them. Calhoun Transport has been running since 2023 and is a registered interstate motor carrier, USDOT 4095957 and MC 1561451. Those numbers are public and you can look them up before you let anybody put a winch line on your vehicle.

The trucks are insured, and that includes coverage on the vehicles being hauled rather than just on the truck doing the hauling. If you want the specifics for a fleet or dealer arrangement, ask on the phone and you will get them.

It matters most on the calls where somebody else is going to ask questions later. An insurance adjuster looking at a recovery, a dealership releasing a car, a fleet manager signing off on a transfer: all of them would rather deal with a carrier that exists on paper.

Straight answers, including the unwelcome ones

The most useful thing a towing company can do on the phone is tell you what you actually need, even when that is less than you called about. If a jump start will fix it, you do not need a tow. If the car is in a ditch and undamaged, that is a recovery and it is priced as one. If your vehicle is too heavy for our deck, the honest answer is to say so rather than send a truck out to find out in your driveway.

Same with timing. Being based in Fort Calhoun makes us close to Blair and a long way from the far southwest of the metro, and we will tell you which one you are. An honest estimate you can plan around beats an optimistic one that keeps you standing on a shoulder.
